It was the first known instance of what came to be called "Legionnaires Disease. Within a week, 25 people had died and 130 people had been hospitalized. In 1976, in the year of Julius Carry's passing, on August 4th, a mysterious illness struck an American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Although it was discovered that the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the Neshoba County Sheriff's Office and the Philadelphia, Mississippi Police Department were involved, only 7 men were convicted and served less than six years. Their bodies were found two months later.
Working with "Freedom Summer", they were registering African-Americans to vote in the Southern states. In 1964, he was 38 years old when in June, three young civil rights workers - Andrew Goodman and Mickey Schwerner from New York City, and James Chaney from Meridian, Mississippi - were kidnapped and murdered in Mississippi. Their two young sons were adopted by a high school teacher and his wife. American citizens, they were convicted of spying for the Soviet Union. In 1951, Julius was 25 years old when on April 5th, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (husband and wife) were sentenced to death for treason.
Julius carry professional#
Since the 1880's, professional baseball had been segregated and blacks played in the "Negro leagues". He was the first black man to play in the Major Leagues. In 1947, by the time he was 21 years old, on April 15th, Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing first base. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more.
