None of these changes ruin the game or anything, but I can't help but feel that in the process of making things more practical some of the "magic" (both figurative and literal) was lost.Īlso, when comparing to other Myst versions, I can't help but miss the Rime age from RealMyst. Also, this age used to end with a weird animation of a book materializing from a table, but in this version the book is just sitting on the table (boring!). Stoneship is an offender in this regard, as something quirky and interesting like a treasure chest with a knob on the side in the original gets replaced with a more practical but boring looking chest on a flotation device.

This transition made some devices feel more real and tactile, but in the transition some aspects lost their whimsical charm. Some of the tradeoffs that occurred to accommodate VR are a mixed bag.

Some big highlights for me include the MASSIVE sun in the Stoneship age and the beautiful crystals in the Selenetic age (which make a re-appearance at the end of this age, which felt like a reward for me :) ). Each island actually has a completely different art direction from the other versions that really makes this version feel unique, and there are some very notable highlights that are a sight to behold in VR. Seeing all the new interpretations of each of the ages was a highlight for me and does justify this remake's existence. This does help the game feel a bit fresh again even for veterans. One of the main goals of this remake was to make the original Myst fully playable in VR, and as someone who played through the whole game again in VR, I'd say it definitely succeeds at this goal!Īlthough if you've played other Myst versions before like I have, you can't fully recapture the feeling of playing it for the first time, there is an option to randomize the puzzle solutions that does force you to use your brain again a bit rather than robotically inputting the solutions you already know.

Definitely recommend and I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the series. The game gives you all the clues you need and figuring out the puzzle mechanics is the best part of the game. I'm very glad I didn't use any guides or walkthroughs as there isn't much game left once you know the trick to the puzzles. Can beat the game in less than 2 minutes if speedrunning (rushing to end) and the puzzles are very straightforward once you know their mechanic, which at least makes achievement hunting easy enough after the first playthrough. Unfortunately, even with the randomized puzzle feature there isn't much replayability. I loved how they incorporated sound into so many of the puzzles and implementation of the puzzles was so creative, especially for the time. The difficulty felt perfect as I never got stuck anywhere but definitely had multiple "aha" moments while exploring the islands as all the pieces gradually fell together.

Now as an adult playing in VR, everything makes so much more sense and I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzles. First played Myst at the library as a child and don't think I managed to solve a single puzzle, although I still remember how novel the environment was for the time.
